Foothill Court Residence
Altadena, CA (UNDER CONSTRUCTION)
REBUILDING WITHIN CONTEXT In the wake of the 2025 Eaton Fire in Altadena, BAR Architects & Interiors was commissioned by a young family to rebuild the home they had lost. Rather than simply reconstruct the past, the project became an opportunity to create a home better suited for a growing family and Southern California’s evolving environmental realities. By leveraging Los Angeles County rebuilding provisions through a like-for-like rebuild, the design preserved the potential of a deep, narrow lot that would otherwise have been nearly unbuildable.
COURTYARD LIVING Inspired by mid-century modern principles, the residence organizes simple rectangular volumes around a central courtyard that anchors daily life. This interior garden brings daylight deep into the home and creates a natural transition between private rooms and shared spaces, reinforcing seamless indoor-outdoor living.
FIRE-CONSCIOUS DESIGN Resilience is embedded in the architecture itself. Noncombustible stucco and fiber cement cladding resist ember ignition, while protected roof edges and defensible gravel and flagstone buffers strengthen the perimeter. Passive solar orientation, thermal mass, cross-ventilation, and drought-tolerant native planting support long-term performance, proving that fire-conscious design can be both beautiful and attainable.
