Established in 1972 by the Community Church of Mill Valley, The Redwoods is a freestanding, non-denominational, not-for-profit multilevel senior residential community. On 10 acres, the community houses approximately 340 residents in three levels of living: independent living apartments, assisted living apartments and skilled nursing.
As part of a broader campus program known as Revitalizing the Redwoods, BAR Architects’ scope included renovating and “greening” the existing grounds, selected buildings, and creating new buildings to expand the facilities. Emphasis has been placed on maintaining the ambience and aesthetic qualities of the campus, as well as protecting and highlighting the local environment.
The interior renovation and modernization of the common-area facilities includes a bold new entry lobby, kitchen, dining room and auditorium. The new wellness center is an addition to common area facilities and situated to provide views of the nearby wetlands. The program includes an exercise studio, research library and therapy pools.
Renovation of the existing 149 independent living units was completed over a two-year period, with updates to the kitchen and bathrooms. The new exterior cladding, replacement doors and windows offer the residents a more comfortable living environment.
Reflecting the values of the Mill Valley community, The Redwoods is also strongly committed to principles of sustainable design. Sustainable aspects of the renovation include solar power, water conservation, reuse of over 95% of the existing buildings, and concentration of new additions within the site footprint.
