Located on the northern edge of Tokyo’s popular Showa Kinen Koen, HCM’s newest Sun City Palace engages itself with the park. From the entry approach down a wooded estate drive along the park’s edge, to the expansive Dining and Library Garden, Sun City Palace Showa Kinen Koen has been envisioned by BAR as an extension of the park. A family of three independent buildings plus Care Center joined by a ring of public space, frame the park views to create a community.
Distinctive and individual buildings address the park and southern light. They stand together, faces turned toward the sun, creating unobstructed views of the park and horizon. The communal sense of privacy is balanced with the unique identity of the buildings and the calming nature of the forested park. Like the architecture, the primary goal of the interior design - from planning to materials to furnishings - is to achieve harmony with Showa Kinen Koen. Accordingly, we shall create a community of quiet, contemplative elegance with a heightened awareness of living amidst nature.
Sun City Palace Showa Kinen Koen shares the mission of the park: to allow the healing qualities of the natural world to restore and rejuvenate the senior citizens of Japan. It means providing a setting where beauty can play an uplifting role in people’s lives. And it means creating environments that enable senior citizens to live with vigor, dignity and a sense of community.
