BAR Architects was commissioned to masterplan and design a phased renovation of this 1930's-era complex of un-reinforced masonry buildings, originally built to process Central Valley sugar beets. The 106-acre site in Clarksburg, CA is home to a vibrant, mixed-use development with commercial, retail and housing components. The exceptional views of the Sacramento Valley, close proximity to downtown Sacramento, CA and unique architectural setting favor this as a destination for visitors seeking wine tasting, shopping and dining opportunities.
The first phase of the master plan includes conversion of three historic warehouse buildings into the Carvahlo Family Winery at Old Sugar Mill spaces accommodating up to 10 micro-wineries. The new Galeria de Vinho, with two new ribbons of skylights and custom designed retail storefronts, creates a new pedestrian street linking each of the custom-crush winery retail/tasting rooms. In addition, the Galeria and adjoining outdoor areas support an assortment of wine and community events, including art exhibits, wine and music festivals and private outside celebrations. Future phases of the master plan include development of additional retail spaces, restaurants, a small hotel, commercial office buildings and artists’ live/work lofts as well as residential cottages, single-family housing and senior housing facilities.
