Formerly a convalescent hospital and student dormitory, this mid-century modern concrete building repositioned to create a luxury apartment community that’s urban and chic. BAR was asked to re-imagine the space to appeal to tech savvy, energetic and socially responsible residents in this Lower Pacific Heights neighborhood.

The outdated finishes were stripped away and partitions cleared to reveal the concrete structure as a way to unify the interior and exterior expression. Wood, black anodized aluminum, glass and stone come together to create a crisp and contemporary interior palette.

The 67 existing units were redesigned to provide open kitchens, a full range of modern amenities and new finishes throughout. At the ground floor, four new units were added to the project, complete with private outdoor space. New amenities include a lobby, community room, fitness center, bike room, leasing office and business center. Outside, new lighting, planters, and gardens were also added to complete the transformation.

Sustainable building practices were incorporated, including use of materials such as FSC certified wood, low-VOC paints and coatings, fully recyclable rubber floors & aluminum windows, and Cri Green Label Plus Carpeting. Low-flow water fixtures, energy saving light fixtures and Energy Star Appliances were also installed to reduce energy use.
