Nestled between an established Palo Alto residential neighborhood and the Stanford Research Park, University Terrace, currently under construction, will provide Stanford’s faculty with a choice of 112 multifamily residences and 68 single-family homes. Working together with Stanford’s internal team, BAR planned and designed the multifamily homes, fitness facility, community building/pool complex and cottage homes. The overall community is targeted for LEED ND Platinum rating.
The arrival experience begins with a gracious courtyard, and two contiguous three and four-story multifamily buildings flank each side, providing strong visual and functional connections to both the arrival court and the adjacent community park. Designed from the inside out to reflect individual and family lifestyles, the multifamily buildings provide open-plan living with ample natural light. A defined entry foyer, full height windows and French doors create a sense of spaciousness that imparts the feel of a home rather than an apartment.
BAR’s design for the community fitness building locates a composition of functional pavilions between the multifamily buildings and helps anchor the arrival court. The community building and pool complex is sited adjacent to the community open space and conveniently located between the single family homes and the multifamily residences. The building’s series of spaces were created to provide functional flexibility and to encourage indoor/outdoor gathering.
Cottage homes have been designed utilizing a modified zero-lot line concept to maximize side-yard usability and privacy within a highly efficient site plan.
