In the heart of SOMA lives a growing post production film editing company that came to BAR looking to expand their services in a comfortable and contemporary atmosphere. BAR was tasked with designing their expanded upstairs tenant space which involved challenges like salvaging materials from the existing space, incorporating sustainable materials and planning, and fitting all program needs into approximately 3,500 gsf.
BAR implemented sustainable design solutions by using low VOC carpet and paint, and sustainably harvested wood flooring. The integrity and character of the interior industrial space was maintained by leaving exposed concrete walls, columns, wood ceilings and systems. A glass and aluminum wall encompassing an existing office was salvaged to become a conference room wall. Existing fluorescent lights were salvaged and reused throughout the open office area. Daylighting from existing skylights and large windows minimizes the need for electrical light and shade coverings and lighting controls allow occupants complete control over light levels.
The completed expansion includes a conference room for large meetings and video conferencing, an open day lit office area, three private offices, a private bathroom for clients and a large sound proof screening room for showing work to producers and directors.
