The Healdsburg Family Housing development consists of eleven residential buildings, each composed of between four and seven apartments. BAR has configured a mixture of building types to create a variety of choices for residents and the broader community. Residential buildings are alternated on the site to create satellite recreation areas and to allow all units access to both public and private open space.
The unit mix includes one, two and three-bedroom units designed in both townhouse and flat-style apartments. Buildings recall the beautiful, rural traditions of Sonoma County in form, colors and materials appropriate for this context.
The multifamily residences are situated alongside a community building which serves as an educational, entertainment and recreational space for the residents. The community building includes amenities such as a large community room, a computer lab, administrative offices, picnic and barbeque areas and play structures for children. Additionally, the project design incorporates many sustainable design principles including a bio-swale, higher density by design, preservation of on-site heritage trees, use of drought-tolerant plants for water efficiency, energy efficient appliances, low-VOC paints and recycled-content carpeting.
