South San Francisco Affordable Housing

South San Francisco, CA

NEIGHBORHOOD CONNECTION  Part of a BAR-designed master plan, this 158-unit affordable housing creates community with robust on-site resident services. Neighborhood connections are made with adjacency to a public park, children’s play area, and fitness area with outdoor equipment for community use. The building is within walkable distance of grocery stores, amenities, healthcare, public transportation and day-to-day needs.

CREATING COMMUNITY  A community room provides flexible space for resident town halls and gatherings. An attached kitchen, along with a vegetable and fruit roof garden, gives an opportunity for the residents to gather for healthy meals. The space also opens out to a landscaped courtyard for larger gatherings and access to outdoor green space.

DESIGN FOR ENERGY  This all-electric building is projected to reduce energy consumption below code and lower cost of monthly utilities. Air source heat pumps will provide heating during cooler months and can also provide cooling for warmer climate. Part of the roof will be covered with a PV array, and operable windows provide passive ventilation/cooling.
