Tech Housing

Silicon Valley, CA
Description Credits/Info

This proposed multifamily development would help fill the need of increased housing for employees of the technology industry in Silicon Valley. The community will be comprised of seven residential buildings providing 940 units with swimming pools, courtyards, outdoor roof decks and large amenity spaces. A main pool with large amenity "town hall" space unifies the broader community. Buildings vary in height up to seven floors. Units types range from studios to two-bedrooms.

Along the western edge, a gently curving parking structure topped by residential units is bermed into the earth, providing a buffer from the adjacent roadway. Six rectilinear forms are organized to create multiple landscaped courts, oriented to optimize sunlight into the courtyards and units. Courtyards include a rich variety of spaces and an opportunity for trees, bioswales and recreational areas. Swimming pools are sited against the southern edges of buildings and next to indoor amenity spaces to provide the greatest amount of sun throughout the day. Extensive planting on the roofs of each building extends vegetation across the site.

Residence floors use simple double loaded corridors, and tilting vegetated roofs provide a layer of topography that slopes down to the east, creating a dynamic eve line. Roofs rise at the center and include PV panels and solar thermal hot water arrays. A carefully organized system of vertical fins covers the southwestern facades, protecting them from unwanted heat gain and glare. Additional sustainable features include geo-exchange heating, air cooled heat pumps with heat recovery, blackwater treatment and renewable energy generation.
