The wine cellar of this BAR-designed residence is the ultimate wine cave, situated high above the vineyards of Napa Valley, showcasing a spectacular panorama of the Silverado Trail and Mount St. Helena. Having planted one acre of vines on their 40-acre property, the owners desired a stunning environment in which to store and enjoy their wines with friends and family.
From the upper levels of the 9,300 gsf home, a secret elliptical stair winds down below the earth to a long, softly lit barrel-vaulted cave. The first space to be encountered is the tasting room, lined with the owner’s select collection of red and white wines. As the 100-yard underground cave angles towards the west, a glow pulls one down a wide theatrical stairway to the lounge, dining room and terrace. The generously sized circular terrace with its unparalleled Napa Valley view is on a different level than the home’s other view terraces. A significant curved stone retaining wall holds the earth back while adding an additional dramatic feature to this one-of-a-kind outdoor room. Discretely private from the rest of the house, the wine cave’s hospitality rooms and terrace become a separate entertainment space for the family, as well as for fundraising and corporate events.
One can’t help but realize in the summer evenings, with a glass of Cahors, the fire pit ablaze, and the fog rising up from the valley – life is good.
