Reception Center

Shanghai, China
Description Credits/Info

Rolling landscape mounds, layers of specimen trees, flanking stonewalls with security gates, and a curving arrival arcade with a screened porte-cochere together provide complete visual privacy for guests of this 30,000 gsf Reception Center. The simple parti of three wings connected via a circulation promenade takes advantage of the large site, brings in an abundance of natural light and makes the building easy to understand and navigate for guests.

Guests are immersed in nature via the interweaving of landscape gardens and interior courtyards. Excitement is created with special features such as the Tea Lounge ‘bridge’ spanning a waterfall—which links the Reception and Conference wings. A similar sense of excitement is offered at the Café lounge which cantilevers over the South Water Garden. As a ‘guiding light’ for sustainable design, BAR proposes a building that offers high design while giving guests the experience of being immersed in nature.
