The Segundo Services Center (SSC) is the last piece of a master plan that knits together a variety of buildings and activity spaces to form a vibrant, livable student community.
Designed to be the gathering place for the 1,200 student residents of this district, the building contains the Academic Advising Center, a Computer Center, Front Desk and Mail, Recreation Lounge, a Central Laundry and a Convenience Store. Housing administration offices are located in the upper floors and a Maintenance Shop with Electrical Vehicle Parking occupies an entire quadrant. The building is sited opposite a large, open landscaped quad, alongside a pedestrian path that links the north student residences to the south Dining Commons.
BAR’s design envisions a three-story 34,000 gsf modern building with all student activity spaces within easy access at the ground level and university offices located on the upper levels. Planted courtyards and large expanses of glass connect building users with the outdoors. Exterior forms are kept simple and proportioned to allow ample natural daylight and ventilation.
Certified LEED Platinum, this building incorporates many sustainable design components such as living roofs for greater thermal insulation, sun shading over operable windows, high efficiency lighting for improved interior working environment, and chilled beam technology for energy savings. Extensive storm water management, on-site renewable energy, water efficient landscaping and low-flow plumbing fixtures as well as recycled content and regionally produced materials were incorporated. BAR's responsibilities include producing the Detailed Project Program (DPP), DPP verification and update, Master Architect of design, and Quality Control Architect during construction.
