Dongtan Golf Resort & Community

Chongming Island, China
Description Credits/Info

BAR Architects’ design of the Dongtan Golf resort and Community strives to reflect Chinese conventions of form, style and meaning, but with an architectural expression which speaks specifically about building in the 21st century. This luxury destination includes the Dongtan Lodge, a golf hotel and spa resort, as well as the Dongtan Clubhouse, which will compliment the Fazio-designed course.

The Lodge is conceived as a series of pavilions organized around a central water garden. Guests arrive in the auto court under the porte-cochere drop-off, and are taken immediately to their hotel room or cottage and checked in, or escorted across the water to a concierge kiosk floating above lily pads in the garden. Amenities include a spa, outdoor lap pool, relaxation pavilion, Chinese and Japanese restaurants, fitness center and children’s activity center.

The Lodge’s hotel rooms comprise a sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces, scripting a unique experience for guests as they cross through a small entry garden to a screened entry foyer, then finally arriving in a glass “jewel box” with private outdoor space and sweeping golf course views. The suites are clustered into small, two-story buildings, reinforcing the concept of pavilions in a garden setting.

The Clubhouse is organized as two separate building wings, each serving distinctly different member activities. The South Building contains the club’s social components, including the dining rooms, lounge, bar and VIP facilities. The North Building contains more active member uses, including men’s & women’s golf locker rooms, the spa, fitness facilities and children’s center. Connecting these two building is a second story bridge, providing weather protection for guests entering one of the separate entries to social, VIP or golf/spa areas of the clubhouse.
