Originally a two unit property consisting of a basement one bedroom and two bedroom upper unit, BAR Architects was commissioned to design a full interior remodel, including replacing all interior finishes, plumbing, electrical and introducing full house distributed audio, video and ethernet. The design challenge of this project was to bring a lovely, San Francisco period home up to date for a young couple. The architects removed interior walls from the main floor in order to open up a dramatic western view through the house. From the front door on the east side of the house one can now see clearly through the principal rooms to the Pacific Ocean in the distance. The interior remodel also included installation of all new doors and windows of solid-wood core, new oak hardwood floors and teak veneer cabinetry throughout. The inclusion of extensive custom lighting design showcases the owners growing contemporary art collection. A new master bath suite with views of the Pacific Ocean was added and includes a solid limestone bathtub. The existing deck was extended to accommodate a new cedar hot-tub. To maintain the historic fabric of the residence’s San Francisco neighborhood, the exterior and public façade was repaired and repainted while lift and slide windows were added to the west façade to optimize views.
