Like many, we are angry at the senseless killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others. We are outraged by the realities and systemic oppression that Black Americans experience every day. However, to be angry is not enough – taking action is what will drive change.
BAR Architects has been reflecting, listening and learning. Our leadership and employees have taken time to think critically and discuss our practice, process, and ways to actively support and amplify diversity, equity and inclusion in our firm and communities. We are committed to improving, creating open dialogue and taking meaningful actions.
As a start, we commit to the following
immediate and near-future actions:
Expanding our firm’s conversations on racial justice and formally engaging our firm in Diversity-Equity-Inclusion (DEI) trainings.
Actively participating in organizations dedicated to racial justice and supporting the growth of BIPOC within our field of practice, starting with NOMA.
Going beyond dialogue – sharing and measuring our actions and reporting our findings to our firm on an annual basis, with the goal of continuing to build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive practice and community.
We can, and will, do better to help us move forward to achieve equity. Black Lives Matter is more than just a statement – it is an ongoing commitment. By being proactive rather than reactive, we can and will positively impact our firm and community and accelerate equity and inclusion for all.
