BAR Architects held the 2017 CLT Tower Competition to explore and advance the use of Cross Laminated Timber as a building material within the midrise residential tower typology.
Entrants were encouraged to consider advances in materials, sustainable systems, and urban-architectural methodologies as possible resources to help alleviate the housing crisis in San Francisco. The competition was an exploration of CLT as an architectural material, but also an examination of methods for creating vertical communities within the city.
Design requirements for the competition placed an emphasis on practicality. Participants were encouraged to create interesting concepts that fully applied the benefits of Cross Laminated Timber, while carefully considering San Francisco’s building, zoning, and structural requirements.
